DGFT Sets Up Export Helpdesk
DGFT Launches Trade Helpdesk for Exporters
In a bid to strengthen India's export ecosystem and address the challenges arising from shifting global trade dynamics, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce has launched a dedicated 'Global Tariff and Trade Helpdesk'. The initiative is aimed at assisting exporters and other stakeholders in navigating trade-related issues, particularly those stemming from the recent imposition of reciprocal tariffs by the United States.
The helpdesk is designed to offer real-time support and information to exporters facing difficulties due to changes in tariff structures, import surges, and export restrictions. By facilitating timely access to critical trade-related data and updates, the helpdesk seeks to help businesses adapt to evolving market conditions and explore new export opportunities.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, the DGFT and its affiliated departments are closely monitoring global developments in trade policy, especially those related to tariff modifications and countermeasures imposed by key trade partners. The helpdesk is part of a broader strategy to help Indian exporters remain competitive in a complex and rapidly changing international trade environment. Officials note that the current global landscape is marked by an increase in trade protectionism, with several countries revising tariff regimes in response to economic and geopolitical pressures. These changes have led to both challenges and potential opportunities for Indian exporters, depending on the product category and destination market.
The DGFT’s initiative comes at a time when Indian businesses, particularly MSMEs engaged in exports, are seeking more clarity and support to navigate international markets effectively. With the introduction of this helpdesk, exporters will have a centralized platform to seek guidance on specific trade issues, including the impact of foreign tariffs, compliance requirements, and emerging market trends.
The commerce ministry also highlighted the dual nature of the current trade environment—on one hand, there is increased pressure from imports in certain sectors; on the other, there are new opportunities opening up for Indian exporters as global supply chains adjust. By offering structured and timely assistance, the Global Tariff and Trade Helpdesk is expected to serve as a valuable tool for exporters looking to mitigate risks and tap into new markets. The move reinforces the government's focus on promoting foreign trade as a key driver of economic growth.
