DGFT Teams Up with Amazon India for MSME Empowerment
In a significant move to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and boost e-commerce exports, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has joined forces with leading e-commerce player Amazon India.
Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between DGFT and Amazon India, both entities will collaborate to enhance the capabilities of MSMEs. The initiative is part of the Districts as Export Hubs plan outlined in the Foreign Trade Policy 2023. The goal is to connect local producers, even in rural areas, with global supply chains.
As part of this collaboration, Amazon and DGFT will conduct capacity-building sessions, training, and workshops for MSMEs in districts identified by DGFT. The initiative aims to enable exporters and MSMEs to showcase and sell their 'Made in India' products on a global scale.
The core objective is to leverage e-commerce platforms to assist local exporters and MSMEs in reaching international buyers. The collaboration aligns with the Foreign Trade Policy 2023, highlighting e-commerce as a key area for amplifying India's exports.
E-commerce platforms across India will identify districts to undertake various capacity-building and outreach activities in collaboration with DGFT-Regional Authorities. These activities will educate MSMEs on e-commerce exports, covering aspects such as imaging, digital cataloging, tax advisory, and more. Amazon India has initially identified 20 districts for these capacity-building sessions under the MoU.
DGFT is also in talks with other e-commerce platforms like Flipkart/Walmart, eBay, Rivexa, Shopclues, Shiprocket, DHL Express, etc., for similar collaborations in different districts across the country. This strategic initiative aims to support and promote new exporters and MSME producers, contributing significantly to the goal of achieving $1 trillion in goods exports by 2030.
This partnership marks a pivotal step towards fostering a conducive environment for Indian entrepreneurs to expand their e-commerce exports, strengthen their businesses, and establish global brands.
