MSMEs Go Green: India's Bold Initiatives for Sustainability and Women-Led Growth

The Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in India has introduced several initiatives to promote sustainable and women-led businesses. The Zero Defect, Zero Effect (ZED) scheme, focused on eco-friendly manufacturing, is now free for women-led MSMEs, with the government guaranteeing full financial support for certification costs. Under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Productivity (RAMP) program, three sub-schemes were launched:

  1. MSME Green Investment and Financing for Transformation Scheme (MSE GIFT Scheme): Aims to facilitate the adoption of green technology by providing interest subvention and credit guarantee support.
  2. MSE Scheme for Promotion and Investment in Circular Economy (MSE SPICE Scheme): The first-ever circular economy initiative offering credit subsidies to support projects, aiming for zero emissions in the MSME sector by 2070.
  3. MSE Scheme on Online Dispute Resolution for Delayed Payments: A pioneering effort utilizing legal support, modern IT tools, and artificial intelligence to address delayed payments for micro and small enterprises.

RAMP's overarching objectives include enhancing collaboration between the central and state governments in MSME promotion, upgrading technology, strengthening financing markets, promoting green initiatives, and reducing delayed payments. Additionally, new initiatives include the Support for the Commercialization of the IP Programme (MSME – SCIP Programme) for innovators to commercialize intellectual property.

These schemes were announced during the 2nd meeting of the National MSME Council, chaired by MSME Minister Narayan Rane, who urged states and union territories to contribute to the promotion and development of the MSME sector.
