Tamil Nadu's Blue Economy Roadmap: Targeting ₹42,745 Crore in Seafood Exports
Tamil Nadu is setting its sights on achieving ₹42,745 crore (US$5 billion) in seafood exports through a strategic roadmap to bolster its blue economy. Leveraging its 1,076-kilometre coastline and rich marine biodiversity, the state aims to strengthen its position as a key player in India’s seafood export sector. This initiative focuses on sustainable marine resource utilisation, infrastructure development, and economic growth, aligning with India’s vision to harness its coastal potential.
The state’s plan emphasises modernising fisheries to meet global demand for high-quality seafood. Tamil Nadu significantly contributes to India’s marine exports, and this roadmap seeks to scale up production and enhance quality standards. Investments in advanced infrastructure, including cold storage facilities, modern fish processing units, and export-oriented logistics hubs, will streamline the supply chain. Upgrading fishing harbours and landing centres will further ensure efficient handling and transportation of marine products.
Technology and sustainability are central to the strategy. The adoption of IoT-based monitoring systems and sustainable aquaculture practices will boost productivity while minimising environmental impact. Tamil Nadu is promoting eco-friendly fishing methods, regulating quotas, and preventing overfishing to preserve marine ecosystems. Cage farming and research into high-value species like shrimp and crab will enhance export potential while ensuring long-term resource sustainability.
The roadmap prioritises skill development for fishermen and industry stakeholders. Training programs will cover modern fishing techniques, post-harvest handling, and compliance with international food safety standards. Coastal communities, including women who play a vital role in the fisheries value chain, will benefit from targeted support, such as access to credit and entrepreneurial opportunities, fostering inclusive growth and sustainable livelihoods.
Tamil Nadu aims to tap into the growing global demand for seafood in markets like the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia. With a diverse product range, including frozen shrimp, squid, and cuttlefish, the state is well-positioned to meet international standards and leverage trade agreements.
