Assam’s GI-Tagged Tezpur Litchi Makes Export Debut in Dubai
In a boost for agricultural exports from the North East, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the first export of GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai on June 7, 2026. The one metric tonne consignment marks an important step in taking region-specific Indian products to international markets. Known for its exceptional sweetness, bright red appearance and distinctive aroma, Tezpur Litchi is one of Assam’s most prized horticultural products. The Geographical Indication (GI) tag has strengthened its market identity and enhanced its appeal among global buyers. The export initiative has also delivered direct benefits to farmers, with growers associated with the shipment receiving nearly 10 per cent higher prices than prevailing domestic market rates. The consignment was flagged off in the presence of Agriculture Production Commissioner Smt Aruna Rajoria, IAS, and APEDA Chairman Shri Abhishek Dev, IAS. The development is expected to open new export opportunities for farmers, FPOs and agri exporters from the region.
