A New Horizon for Indian MSMEs in Global Trade

India–Chile CEPA Talks Surge Ahead

The successful completion of the 4th round of negotiations for the India–Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on 5th December 2025 presents significant opportunities for Indian MSME entrepreneurs. Over five days, Indian and Chilean delegations made remarkable progress on key aspects of the deal, setting the stage for enhanced trade relations.

For Indian MSMEs, the CEPA opens doors to the Chilean market, a strategic gateway to Latin America. The anticipated agreement aims to remove trade barriers and reduce tariffs that currently limit the export potential of Indian MSME products such as handicrafts, manufactured goods, and value-added services. This creates an empowering prospect for Indian small and medium enterprises to scale their exports and establish a firmer presence abroad.

Chile offers a particularly attractive landscape for Indian MSMEs due to its stable economy, high purchasing power, and strong demand for competitively priced, high-quality goods. Sectors such as textiles, leather products, automotive components, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, and eco-friendly packaging solutions have strong growth potential, especially as Chilean importers look to diversify sourcing beyond traditional partners. Indian MSMEs, known for cost efficiency and customisation can build long-term supply relationships in these niches.

In addition, Chile’s focus on innovation, renewable energy, mining technology, and digital services opens avenues for Indian MSME service providers. IT-enabled services, fintech solutions, skill development services, and niche consulting offerings are expected to see rising opportunities under CEPA. Chile’s mining sector, one of the world’s largest, also provides demand for Indian MSMEs manufacturing mining equipment, safety gear, electrical machinery, and maintenance services, areas where Indian enterprises have increasing global competitiveness.

Importantly, the agreement promises to address common MSME challenges such as high logistics costs and regulatory hurdles, by enabling smoother customs procedures, preferential tariff benefits, and supportive trade facilitation measures. These improvements will help Indian MSMEs lower costs, increase efficiency, and enhance competitiveness in Chile’s dynamic market.

The recent meeting between Ms. Claudia Sanhueza of Chile and Shri Piyush Goyal highlights the strong bilateral commitment to finalize the CEPA on schedule. Their joint focus on the agreement’s strategic importance reflects a shared vision to deepen economic ties and unlock collaborative opportunities for MSMEs from both nations.

Beyond tariff benefits, the CEPA will allow Indian MSMEs to expand trade, investment, and service linkages with Chile, a country whose resource-driven economy and diverse consumer base offer promising demand for Indian goods. This partnership also positions Indian entrepreneurs to gain valuable international exposure and knowledge to compete on a global scale.

As negotiations near completion, Indian MSMEs stand to gain from a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable trade framework. The India-Chile CEPA holds the potential to transform bilateral trade by empowering MSMEs to grow sustainably and compete more effectively worldwide.
