Promoting Sustainable Finance for MSMEs in India: A Key Step Towards Combating Climate Change
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of the Indian economy, contributing significantly to GDP, employment generation, and fostering entrepreneurship. However, they also account for a substantial portion of greenhouse gas emissions due to their reliance on conventional energy sources and limited resources to adopt sustainable practices. As the world seeks to combat climate change and decarbonize various sectors, India is taking active steps to promote sustainable finance for MSMEs. India has a significant role to play in the global fight against climate change. As part of its strategy for COP28, India aims to showcase its commitment to decarbonizing the MSME sector and harnessing the potential of sustainable finance.
28th Session of the Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is all set to take place in Dubai from November 30 to December 12. India currently faces a USD 16 trillion gap in sustainable finance for MSMEs and with this industry becoming a dominant economic driver it is expected that strategies to combat the credit shortage will be on India's Agenda in COP-28.
Sustainable finance for MSMEs can foster economic growth by driving innovation, reducing operational costs, and enhancing market competitiveness. Encouraging sustainable practices ensures that MSMEs consider the social and environmental implications of their activities, which aligns with corporate social responsibility.
India has been promoting green lending by providing incentives to financial institutions to offer concessional credit and lower interest rates for MSMEs investing in eco-friendly technologies and practices and issued its first-ever green bonds to fund solar power projects, followed by wind and small hydro projects which serves as a source of sustainable finance for MSMEs involved in environmentally responsible projects.
India plans to highlight success stories of MSMEs that have successfully integrated sustainability into their operations. These stories serve as examples to inspire other businesses and demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of adopting green practices.
Experts advise the government to fund MSMEs' clean technology initiatives and to successfully execute current laws to shift to a low-carbon economy.
