WeWork India to invest up to $200,000 in early-stage startups
Flexible workspace provider WeWork India said on Tuesday it has launched an investment program for early-stage Indian startups, under which it will invest pre-seed or seed capital of up to $200,000 in selected startups.
According to a statement from the firm, "WeWork Labs investments will focus on helping early-stage startups through a blend of pre-seed capital, competitive guidance, and comprehensive business support to help them scale."
For the previous five years, WeWork Labs served primarily as an incubator and accelerator for more than 500 firms before starting an investment program. There are 330 businesses participating in its acceleration program right now. Chiratae Ventures, Waterbridge Ventures, IIFL, Huddle, AdvantEdge Founders, and Lead Angels are among the co-investors in WeWork India.
The US-based parent company's Indian affiliate, WeWork India, began operations in the nation in 2017 and now operates around 6.5 million square feet of office space across New Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad. It competes in the competitive coworking space market alongside companies like Smartworks, IndiQube, Awfis, 91Springboard, CoWrks, and more.
In June 2020, three years after it entered the Indian market, the parent company had invested $100 million in its India operations to expand the business. As per reports, it holds a 23% stake in WeWork India.
WeWork's parent company, WeWork, is facing financial challenges with significant losses, but WeWork India, in which WeWork Global holds a smaller stake, is confident that these issues will not impact its operations in India due to its majority ownership by the Embassy Group.
