A Report on Exploring the Challenges of Non-Integration with E-Commerce Platforms for MSME’s
A recent report by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) highlights the challenges faced by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that are not integrated with ecommerce platforms. Integrated firms are making significant inroads into markets by leveraging these platforms, creating a potential divide. The report emphasizes that while there are benefits for MSMEs that integrate with ecommerce platforms, technology can pose a survival threat for firms that are unable to do so.
The report underscores that this divide can exacerbate inequities between integrated and non-integrated firms. To address this issue, policymakers and stakeholders need to understand the barriers preventing firms from joining these platforms. The report identifies a lack of knowledge and information about digital technologies and e-commerce platforms as a significant reason why some firms remain non-integrated.
However, the decision to join ecommerce platforms isn't solely determined by knowledge; it also depends on a firm's internal capabilities. Bridging the gap between these two categories of firms will require investments in technology, digital skills, and information. Furthermore, it's essential to enhance the capabilities and productivity of MSMEs by providing them with infrastructure services, financial services, business skills, enterprise support, and training. In doing so, efforts can be made to reduce the disparities between integrated and non-integrated firms in the evolving business landscape.
