Mahila Coir Yojana for the Empowerment of Rural Women Artisans
The Mahila Coir Yojana (MCY) is a coir industry self-employment program designed to give self-employment options to rural women artisans who work with Coir (the fiber from the outer husk of the coconut used to make ropes and matting). The Coir Vikas Yojana program emphasizes women's empowerment through the distribution of spinning equipment at discounted prices followed by suitable skill development training. The program promotes the growth of both local and export markets, as well as the empowerment of women, the creation and development of jobs and businesses, improved raw material utilization, trade-related services, and welfare programs for coir workers.
The applicant must be a rural woman artisan in the areas that produce coir in order to be eligible for the Mahila Coir Yojana. Supervisors, instructors, and craftspeople in the coir business can all receive training through the program. Under the Mahila Coir Yojana, 740 women artisans received training in 2022. Studies have found that the program has led to a significant increase in the income of rural women (PIB Delhi, 2022). The program intends to give rural women artisans in all the places where processing coconut husk is a significant industry the opportunity to work for themselves and become entrepreneurs.
