Celebrating India's SME Excellence of with the 10th India SME 100 Awards

On October 27, 2023, the 10th edition of the India SME 100 Awards, in conjunction with the Conference on Enabling MSMEs for a $5 Trillion Economy, brought together visionaries, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders to celebrate the heart of India's economic engine. The event commenced with a warm welcome from Ms. Sushma Morthania, Convenor of the Jury and DG, India SME Forum, followed by a ceremonial lamp lighting with Saraswati Vandana and an inaugural address by Dr. J. S. Juneja, Vice Chairman, India SME Forum.

The event was thoughtfully divided into four sessions of panel discussions, an official award distribution ceremony, and an enlightening Fireside Chat. These segments illuminated the multifaceted landscape of Indian SMEs, their potential, and the strategies needed to facilitate their growth.

Session 1: “Digitalisation – A Key Driver for Future-Proofing MSMEs”

The first panel discussion exemplified the transformative power of technology for SMEs. Distinguished panelists, including Mr. Manish Gupta, Mr. Paritosh Sharma, Mr. Narinder Mahajan, and Mr. Rajeev Mehta, shared insights into the integration of digital tools into Indian MSMEs. These tools empower SMEs to adapt swiftly to market changes, enhance customer engagement, optimise operations, and achieve global competitiveness and sustainability. The rise of Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) brands, many of which are MSMEs, showcased the strategic harnessing of online channels. This session highlighted the importance of knowledge sharing and demystifying the digital realm for SMEs in the tech-driven age.

Award Distribution Ceremony: Recognising Excellence

Following the insightful discussion, the event transitioned to the official award distribution ceremony, honouring the top 100 winners. Mr. Vinod Kumar, President, India SME Forum, took the stage to recall the journey of the India SME 100 Awards and its evolution. The chief guests and dignitaries present, including Dr. J. S. Juneja, Shri Amitabh Choudhry, Shri Ganesh Sankaran, Tilak Raj Bajalia, and Shri Dilip Cherian, added their voices to the celebration.

Mr. Amitabh Choudhry, MD & CEO, Axis Bank, emphasised the transformative power of MSMEs and Axis Bank's mission to be a driving force behind their growth in India's business landscape.

Session 2: “Women as Entrepreneurs - A New Paradigm for Economic Growth”

This session delved into the pivotal role of women in India's progress and economic growth. The panelists namely, Ms. Srishti Sharma, Ms. Mitali Nikore, and Ms. Purvi Roy, moderated by Ms. Nirupama Soundararajan, discussed the empowerment of women through entrepreneurship and strategies for fostering a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem with gender inclusivity and equality. Gender diversity in decision-making fosters innovation and balanced perspectives, and women-led businesses excel in profitability and resilience. Recognising and supporting their growth is paramount.

Session 3: "New Age Finance for Sustainable Growth"

The third session delved into innovative financial solutions, harnessing fintech, blockchain, and AI technology. These advancements offer deferred payment options, asset and raw material financing, and digital footprint-based unsecured lending. The panel, featuring Mr. Kunal Aggarwal, Mr. Ashok Mittal, Mr. Kamal Kumar Kaushik, Mr. Sangram Singh, and Mr. Preet Agrawal, moderated by Mr. Hemendra Mathur, ventured into the realm of advanced financial tools. These tools empower emerging MSMEs to access capital efficiently, enhance financial discipline, and navigate economic challenges while facilitating their growth. Despite the urban-rural digital divide, there is a growing focus on enlightening micro-enterprises about the digital world, empowering them for progress.

The event's culmination featured a Fireside Chat on "Global Macro Outlook & Foreign Exchange Risk Mitigation for Indian MSMEs," featuring Mr. Brejesh Chalill, Executive VP & Head - Treasury & Markets at AXIS Bank, and moderated by Mr. Vinod Kumar, President of India SME Forum. The chat illuminated the multifaceted role of MSME entrepreneurs, who juggle multiple responsibilities, and provided a fresh perspective on handling these diverse roles. It discussed how Indian MSMEs have evolved in the global market, emphasising their dynamic and promising future on the international stage.

Session 4: “Internationalisation of Indian SMEs”

The final segment explored strategies for expanding the global reach of Indian SMEs. The discussion focused on simplifying the export process, establishing seamless logistics, and harnessing e-commerce to access global markets. H.E. Mr. Isse Abdillahi Assoweh, Hon'ble Ambassador of the Republic of Djibouti and Mr. Abel Aballe Despaigne, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Cuba, highlighted the opportunities in their respective countries, Djibouti and Cuba, for collaboration and growth in the MSME sector.

The 10th India SME 100 Awards and the accompanying conference celebrated the dynamism and innovation within India's SME sector. The event emphasised the transformative power of digitalisation, the importance of women entrepreneurs, the role of new-age finance, and the global potential of Indian SMEs. The future for India's SMEs is radiant and this event showcased the remarkable potential of Indian SMEs and their essential role in India's economic landscape.
