Reviving Lac Artistry: MSME Ministry Pours Rs 2.5 Crore into Prayagraj Cluster

In a significant move, the Union Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has earmarked Rs 2.5 crore for the establishment of a lac products’ cluster in Prayagraj's Shringverpur development block. This forward-looking initiative aims to uplift marginalized farmers and artisans engaged in lac production, as confirmed by district officials. The allocated funds have been directed towards the Bioved Research Society, Prayagraj, under the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI). With this financial boost, the society, currently comprising 512 members, will set up a 3-acre common facility center (CFC) in the Shringverpur block, approximately 40 kilometers from Prayagraj's district headquarters. This CFC will serve as a hub for processing raw lac and offer training in lac cultivation techniques and product manufacturing. The Uttar Pradesh Khadi and Village Industries Board (UPKVIB) in Lucknow will play a pivotal role as the nodal agency.

BK Dwivedi, Director of Bioved Research Institute of Agriculture and Technology (BRIAT)-Prayagraj, outlined, “The common facility will house various machines essential for transforming raw lac into high-quality, pure lac. These machines will be accessible to the member farmers.”

Spanning an expansive 7,000 square feet, the CFC will house essential equipment, including scrapers, crushers, and winnowing machinery for lac cleaning, with an approximate cost of Rs 1.15 crore. Another section will be dedicated to the drying of processed and graded lac.

Dwivedi further noted, “We have actively promoted lac cultivation in the state and have arranged for the purchase of the lac. After processing, a portion of the lac will be sold, and the profits will be shared among the society’s members, while the remainder will be used to create over 400 different types of products.”

Additionally, the society will allocate funds for training farmers and their family members in crafting diverse products at home, ensuring a sustainable source of employment and additional income during non-lac producing months. This holistic approach is set to revitalize the lac industry and empower local communities in Prayagraj.
