Boosting R&D in MSME sector
The Government of India has implemented several initiatives to promote Research and Development (R&D) activities in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. These initiatives aim to nurture and develop ideas, provide consultancy and R&D support, and create lab facilities for entrepreneurs to convert their ideas into marketable products. One of the initiatives is the MSME Innovative Scheme of the Ministry of MSME. This scheme focuses on nurturing and developing ideas in the MSME sector. Under the Incubation component of this scheme, 533 ideas have been approved for nurturing and development with a government grant during the last three years.
Another initiative is the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) of NITI Aayog. AIM supports entrepreneurs and innovation across India. It observes that incubators play a crucial role in nurturing startups and promoting innovation. The NIDHI-inclusive Technology Business Incubator (NIDHI-iTBI) Programme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) is another initiative that supports entrepreneurs. This program provides support to incubators in Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal and Indore. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also introduced a Regulatory Sandbox to promote innovation in the MSME sector. The Regulatory Sandbox allows MSMEs to test their products and services in a controlled environment before launching them in the market.
In addition to these initiatives, several testing and research laboratories have been established by various ministries and organizations such as the Ministry of MSME, Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO), Ministry of Food Processing Industries, and Ministry of Textiles. The Ministry of MSME has also set up 10 Tool Rooms (TR) and 8 Technology Development Centres (TDC) to provide consultancy and R&D support to MSMEs.
