Boost for Indian Economy as Over 3 Crore MSMEs Registered Since 2020

Per the latest government data shared in the Rajya Sabha, India has witnessed phenomenal growth in MSME registrations post-2020 - with over 3.16 crore enterprises registering from July 2020 till December 4th, 2023 under the Udyam Registration process. This tremendous growth in new MSMEs indicates a dynamic formalization of small businesses, greater entrepreneurship, job creation, and formal revenues for the economy.

Udyam Registration was launched in June 2020 to provide a single, permanent ID to all MSME enterprises. Since then, over 3.16 crore units have registered till December 4th, 2023.

Of this, Micro-enterprises comprise a dominant 97%, while small and medium firms make up 2.62% and 0.38% respectively. They are highlighting how smaller businesses are the bedrock of the MSME sector.

The manufacturing segment leads registrations with a 35% share, followed by wholesale & retail trade at 34% and 'Other Services' at 15% - covering top categories.

Out of the total UDYAM Registration, women-owned MSMEs stood at 1,16,36,406. This data was shared by Minister of State for MSMEs, Shri Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma, who also further added on the steps taken by the government to ensure the growth of MSMEs through effective Ease of Doing Business, the inclusion of retailers & traders in the spectrum of MSMEs, Priority Sector lending & extension of non-tax benefits and others.

Significance of Robust MSME Growth:

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises are considered the growth engines of India, contributing nearly 30% to our GDP through their products, services and employment across rural and urban locations.

As one of the largest MSME ecosystems globally with over 63.3 million enterprises, both in informal and formal sectors - the trend of massive formal registrations points to the many positives:

  • Simpler compliance, and documentation for small firms to operate efficiently.
  • Access to formal credit with verifiable KYC and credentials.
  • New job creation in the post-pandemic economy from growing enterprises.
  • Contribution to tax revenues for spending on social sectors.
  • Adoption of digital tools for ease of doing business.

Overall, the Udyam Registration figures reveal robust formalization of grassroots-level businesses and entrepreneurship post-2020. This bodes well for India's ambitious vision to become a $5 Trillion economy within this decade - with greater productivity across sectors and wealth generation at all levels.

However, industry bodies have sought further support for MSMEs to truly harness their potential via:

  • Streamlining of procedures for swift GST, and regulatory compliance.
  • Wider availability of low-cost credit through banks and NBFCs for small firms with limited collateral.
  • Upgrading technology usage across operations for better quality and cost management.
  • Skills training to nurture the local talent pool.

Thus while progress at the registration level is encouraging, the government must ensure it translates to actual growth at grassroots via supportive policies and easier on-ground implementation.

With the right ecosystem, MSMEs can drive sustainable double-digit growth for the Indian economy in the coming decade through their inclusive growth model.
