MSME Employment on the Udyam Site Surpasses 15 crore
The Udyam portal, launched in July 2020, has seen over 3 crore registrations by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which have reported a total of 15 crore jobs. Out of these registrations, 2.06 crore MSMEs reported 13.86 crore jobs directly on the portal, with 3.41 crore women employees. The remaining 1.17 crore jobs were reported by 99.98 lakh micro units registered through the Udyam Assist Portal (UAP). This achievement has been praised by the Minister of MSME, Narayan Rane, and is attributed to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As of the latest data, 2.99 crore of the registered Udyam units are micro enterprises, followed by 5.80 lakh small enterprises and 54,025 medium enterprises. In comparison, the previous system, the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM), registered only 1.02 crore MSMEs during its operation from September 2015 to June 30, 2020, reporting 11 crore jobs.
This shows significant growth in both registrations and job generation under the new Udyam portal.
To formalize unregistered MSMEs without a Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration, the government launched the Udyam Assist Portal (UAP) in January of the current year. This initiative aims to provide these businesses with access to priority sector lending. The
UAP was first discussed in a report by the standing committee on finance, headed by Jayant Sinha, a Member of Parliament and former Minister of State for Finance, in April of the previous year.
