India Sets Stricter Standards for Appliance Imports to Protect Consumers and Promote Local Manufacturing

New Delhi, May 21, 2025In a decisive move aimed at elevating product safety and nurturing domestic manufacturing, the Indian government has introduced stringent quality control norms for a wide range of household and commercial electrical appliances. The latest regulations, set to take effect from March 2026, are expected to significantly curb the influx of substandard imports, particularly from China, while bolstering the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

New Safety Mandate for Appliances

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, issued a gazette notification titled ‘Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025’ on May 19. The order mandates that all electrical appliances—whether for household, commercial, or similar uses, and including battery-operated devices—must bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark, certifying compliance with enhanced safety requirements.

The move expands the list of regulated products far beyond the 23 items previously covered, which included essentials like mixer grinders, ceiling fans, and washing machines. The updated order now encompasses products such as electric recliners, whirlpool baths, electric toilet accessories, dryers, towel rails, beauty devices, and a host of kitchen and personal care gadgets.

Phased Implementation for Industry Players

To facilitate a smooth transition, the government has staggered the implementation timeline based on company size. Large enterprises must comply by March 19, 2026, while small and micro enterprises have until June 19 and September 19, 2026, respectively, to meet the new standards.

Industry and Consumer Impact

Industry experts have welcomed the move, highlighting its potential to attract investment into the domestic manufacturing sector for small appliances. Salil Kapoor, chief evangelist at the India Cellular and Electronics Association, remarked, “This is a timely step that will not only strengthen the local manufacturing ecosystem but also ensure consumers receive safer, higher-quality products.”

The new norms are also expected to address longstanding concerns over the quality of imported appliances, especially those from China, which often fail to meet international safety benchmarks. An executive from a leading electronics manufacturer noted, “Many imported products do not adhere to proper specifications and pose safety risks. The new order will help eliminate such products from the Indian market.”

Boost for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’

The government’s initiative aligns with the broader ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) vision, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and foster a robust local manufacturing base. By standardising product quality and safety, authorities hope to enhance consumer confidence and create a level playing field for Indian manufacturers.

As the deadline approaches, industry stakeholders are gearing up to upgrade their processes and ensure compliance, signalling a new era of quality and safety in India’s fast-growing appliance market.
