Women Exporter’s Program: India SME Forum’s Initiative to Boost Exports for Women-led MSMEs

16th January 2024: On March 1, 2023, the India SME Forum launched the Women Exporters Program in collaboration with UPS and supported by The National Commission for Women. The program aims to empower women entrepreneurs to expand their businesses globally.

The launch event was attended by several government officials including Shri Narayan Rane, Honourable Union Minister for MSME, Shri Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma, Honourable Minister of State for MSME, Shri B. B. Swain, Honourable Secretary for MSME, and Ms. Laura Lane, EVP & Chief Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Officer at UPS.

Although over 35 lakh women entrepreneurs are registered on the Udyam platform for MSMEs, women's participation in exports remains below 5 percent. The Women Exporters Program strives to unlock the immense potential of women-owned enterprises to participate in international trade.

Through training sessions, workshops, case studies and more, the program equipped first-time women exporters with practical knowledge and skills. Participants gained exposure to global business networks and market opportunities. Experts from the India SME Forum, industry leaders and UPS helmed the training and mentoring.

Out of over 2450 applicants, 2000 women entrepreneurs participated in initial boot camps. Of those, 513 advanced to orientation and further training. By the end, 384 women-owned businesses earned export certifications by clearing tests and 185 enrolled in advanced programs. Additionally, 12 participants exhibited at trade shows in Marseilles, France.

As India's largest not-for-profit organization for SMEs, the India SME Forum developed this one-of-a-kind program to empower women entrepreneurs to expand their reach worldwide. By building expertise in trade and providing access to global networks, the Women Exporters Program aims to transform women-owned businesses into successful exporters.
